About the Choir
Who can join the choir?
The choir is for elementary aged children ages 6-12. However, we do accept children slightly outside of this range on a case-by-case basis.
Is any experience necessary to join?
Absolutely not! The Neighborhood Children's Choir is open to all students who would like somewhere to sing and an opportunity to learn music.
What kinds of music does the choir perform?
We try to include a range of different styles and genres of music from varying eras and cultures. We may do religious, classical, popular, folk, and many other types of music. The interests of the parents and children are valued greatly, so suggestions and requests are encouraged. Many songs will be in English, but some music in other languages will be included.
Where and when do rehearsals take place?
Rehearsals are from 1:00-2:15pm on Sundays during the school year in the Memorial Room at the Renton United Methodist Church, located at:
2201 NE 4th Street
Renton, WA 98056

What happens in rehearsals?
The standard course of a children's choir rehearsal begins with warm-ups that also serve help to improve vocal technique and musicianship skills, followed by rehearsing songs by ear and learning reading techniques. About halfway through each rehearsal members of the church community provide a short snack and game break, and at the end of each rehearsal students have the opportunity to wind down with "Choir Member of the Week" where individual students have the opportunity to share something they enjoy, showcase skills, or teach something to their peers.
Where and how often does the choir perform?
We are currently in the process of expanding our options for performance venues, however there are currently opportunities for the students to perform for the church members, either at evening events or at morning services. In the future, concerts may be happening at a variety of community venues. Concerts ideally happen at the end of 6-8 week rehearsal cycles.
Who will be working with the children?
The director of the choir is Çravixtha Acheson. Ms. Acheson is a music teacher in the Lake Washington School District and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Puget Sound and a Master of Music in Music Education from the Boston Conservatory. She has worked with elementary and middle school aged students since 2015 and currently teaches elementary general music and beginning orchestra.
